Marriage licenses/certificates are very important documents. When the license is returned and it is accepted, it becomes the official marriage certificate. This is the document that will legally prove that the couple is married. Therefore, do not alter the document in any manner. If it is altered, our office cannot accept it.
If it is altered, then a new duplicate marriage license will have to be issued, signed, and all information supplied by the person performing the marriage will have to be supplied again.
At the time the license was issued, you were given the opportunity to check for any errors and they should have been discovered at that time. However, if you notice that there is an error, bring the license into our office. We will correct the error and reissue the license at no charge.
After you are married and once we have accepted the license, the only way to correct an error is by an affidavit, which will be attached to the marriage certificate on record. We will not be able to change the information on the certificate itself.
